Senior Instrumentation & Controls Engineer – Specialist

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer to provide specialist-level technical expertise in the design and development of I&C systems supporting CANDU nuclear plants and other nuclear installations.

The successful candidate will work independently on new designs, plant modifications and enhancement/service projects. This position requires significant technical depth in instrumentation and controls, with responsibility for developing engineering solutions, establishing design requirements, supporting multidisciplinary teams and acting as a senior technical authority.

The strongest candidates will bring extensive experience with CANDU I&C systems, particularly safety, safety-related and reactor control systems. Candidates from complex industrial environments may also be considered where they can demonstrate deep, cradle-to-grave control-system design experience and complete system architecture capability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform conceptual and detailed design of instrumentation and control systems for CANDU applications, including new systems and modifications to existing installations.
  • Define system functional and performance requirements, control algorithms, logic arrangements, wiring requirements, control parameters, setpoints and instrument ranges.
  • Address environmental and seismic qualification requirements within I&C designs.
  • Specify, size and select instrumentation and control components.
  • Develop technical documentation including equipment assessments, setpoint calculations, error analyses and technical specifications.
  • Prepare and update I&C design-basis documentation including design requirements, design descriptions, functional specifications and elementary diagrams.
  • Develop the engineering input required for general arrangement drawings, instrument loop diagrams, wiring/connection diagrams and bills of materials.
  • Prepare and maintain wiring and technical design information within computerized wiring programs.
  • Act as a senior I&C technical resource when interfacing with other engineering disciplines, clients, suppliers and internal stakeholders.
  • Respond to technical enquiries from design review teams and regulatory organizations.
  • Provide technical engineering support to site-based teams.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of engineering standards, practices and internal procedures.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations.
  • Independently manage assigned engineering scope, including technical execution, priorities, schedules, budgets and reporting.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Honours degree in a relevant engineering discipline from a recognized university.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario.
  • Extensive relevant engineering experience appropriate to a senior specialist/technical authority position. The formal JD identifies 20 years of pertinent engineering experience as the grade-level expectation; client qualification discussions identify 15+ years with P.Eng. as mandatory. This discrepancy should be confirmed before final screening.
  • Exceptional technical problem-solving capability with the ability to develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Advanced knowledge of I&C system functions, configurations and equipment used within CANDU process, safety and/or safety-related systems.
  • Experience with methodologies and processes associated with nuclear power plant I&C modernization.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial/nuclear QA programs and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable CSA, IEEE and related instrumentation and controls codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as a recognized technical authority within an I&C specialization.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and multidisciplinary collaboration capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer and stakeholder focus.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working directly at an operating nuclear generating station.
  • CANDU-specific I&C experience.
  • Experience with nuclear safety systems such as SDS1, SDS2 and ECI.
  • Experience with Digital Control Computers (DCC) and/or Reactor Regulating Systems (RRS).
  • Distributed control systems experience.
  • Published technical work and/or recognized industry thought leadership.
  • Membership or participation in relevant technical standards committees.
  • For candidates coming from outside nuclear: extensive cradle-to-grave controls design experience within a complex industrial environment such as oil & gas, mining or metallurgy.

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between ¤90.00 and ¤120.00
