Specialist Civil/Structural Engineer – Nuclear
Location: Ontario – Hybrid
Term: 12-Month Contract
Position Overview
The Specialist Civil/Structural Engineer will provide senior technical expertise in structural and seismic engineering in support of CANDU nuclear projects, including operating nuclear power plants, life-extension programs, plant modifications and new-build initiatives.
The role will be responsible for complex structural analysis, seismic assessment, design development, technical review and engineering oversight. The successful candidate must be capable of acting as a senior technical authority, leading assigned scopes and supporting junior engineers while ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, QA requirements, budgets and schedules.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead assigned Civil/Structural engineering scopes and projects.
- Develop design plans, methodologies and engineering approaches.
- Perform and review conceptual, preliminary and detailed structural design.
- Perform structural and seismic analysis of:
- Reinforced concrete structures
- Structural steel systems
- Masonry
- Foundations
- Complex industrial/nuclear structures
- Perform static, dynamic and seismic analysis.
- Complete seismic margin assessments where required.
- Prepare and review:
- Design calculations
- Analysis reports
- Design reports
- Technical specifications
- Design requirements
- Engineering drawings, layouts and sketches
- Perform design verification and independent review of technical documents.
- Ensure engineering deliverables are technically accurate, complete and consistent.
- Apply applicable CSA, NBCC and nuclear-specific codes and standards.
- Support design modifications and Engineering Change Control activities.
- Coordinate Civil/Structural work with other engineering disciplines.
- Provide technical direction to engineers, junior staff and designers.
- Review work completed by others and ensure compliance with QA programs and procedures.
- Manage assigned Civil/Structural scope within approved budget and schedule.
- Support field engineering, construction and commissioning teams.
- Conduct plant walkdowns and field inspections.
- Investigate and resolve field and technical issues.
- Obtain engineering inputs from operations, maintenance, commissioning and interfacing disciplines.
- Participate in formal engineering and design reviews.
- Prepare technical input, estimates and engineering write-ups for proposals.
- Mentor and train staff, including development of structured knowledge-transfer plans.
- Support multiple tasks/projects as required.
The JD specifically requires significant technical ownership, design review, field support, mentoring and accountability for engineering deliverables against schedule and budget.
Required Qualifications
- Civil Engineering degree from an accredited university.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario and in good standing.
- Minimum 15 years of structural analysis and design experience.
- Significant experience designing steel and reinforced-concrete structures.
- Strong structural design and analytical background developed through both office and site experience.
- Experience performing static, dynamic and seismic analysis of structures and foundations.
- Ability to act as a senior technical authority in Civil/Structural Engineering.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian and applicable international structural codes and standards.
- Working knowledge of:
- NBCC
- CSA standards
- CSA S16 – Steel
- CSA A23 series – Concrete
- CSA N289 series – Nuclear seismic design
- Strong working knowledge of at least one structural analysis platform such as:
- SAP2000
- ETABS
- SAFE
- STAAD Pro
- ANSYS
- SSASI
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Mathcad.
- Ability to work independently on technically complex engineering scopes.
- Strong written/verbal communication and stakeholder coordination skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to operate in multidisciplinary project environments with competing priorities.
- Willingness to perform field assignments and travel to client sites.
- Eligible for applicable security clearance.
The formal JD requires at least 15 years' experience, Ontario P.Eng., structural/seismic analysis expertise and knowledge of applicable codes and analysis tools.
Preferred / Asset Qualifications
- 4–5+ years of relevant Canadian nuclear experience or another credible nuclear track record.
- Experience supporting CANDU technology.
- Experience with nuclear plant modifications and ECC processes.
- Experience with nuclear QA procedures, practices and safety requirements.
- 3–5 years of site/field experience.
- Construction experience.
- Experience with massive concrete structures.
- Modernization/refurbishment experience.
- Master's degree or higher.
- Experience across complex heavy industrial structures such as turbine buildings, dams, high-rise/mid-rise buildings or comparable major structures.
The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between ¤90.00 and ¤120.00
