Senior Fuel Handling Engineer

Position Overview

The Senior Fuel Handling Engineer will provide senior-level mechanical engineering expertise supporting the design and development of fuel handling equipment and related mechanical and process systems for CANDU nuclear projects.

The successful candidate will perform hands-on engineering while providing technical direction, mentoring junior engineers and supporting multidisciplinary project teams. The work may support MONARK, EC6, existing CANDU 6 units or CANDU Units 3 and 4 new-build programs. Project assignment will depend on the individual’s technical background and organizational priorities.

This position forms part of a matrixed Engineering Services group. Senior specialists remain connected to the central engineering function while supporting project-specific deliverables, technical problem-solving, training and knowledge transfer across multiple projects.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical and Process-System Design

  • Perform conceptual and detailed design of fuel handling mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Design moving mechanical components, machinery, automated equipment and tooling used within fuel handling applications.
  • Complete process-related design involving D2O, oil-hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Apply knowledge of machine mechanics, mechanics of materials, material selection and machine-component design.
  • Perform component sizing, flow-network analysis and mechanical-system stress analysis.
  • Complete complex engineering calculations involving fluid mechanics, heat loads and component integrity.
  • Develop open- and closed-loop oil-hydraulic circuit designs and associated process-control concepts.

Engineering Documentation and Verification

  • Prepare and maintain engineering documentation, including:
    • Design requirements and design descriptions
    • Design and component specifications
    • Technical specifications
    • Test plans and procedures
    • Commissioning procedures
    • Registration design-submission packages
    • Flow sheets
    • Detailed drawings
    • General arrangements
    • Equipment layouts
  • Review calculations, technical reports, analysis reports, drawings and other engineering documents to support design verification.
  • Review client requirements, governing documents, applicable codes and standards.
  • Ensure engineering activities comply with relevant codes, regulations, client requirements and company procedures.

Project and Technical Leadership

  • Define engineering scopes of work and establish the required project deliverables.
  • Coordinate technically and commercially complex engineering projects.
  • Direct multidisciplinary teams of professional and technical personnel through design, development, procurement, manufacturing, assembly, testing and commissioning.
  • Monitor progress, prepare status reports and communicate technical or delivery matters to clients.
  • Lead conceptual, technical and detailed-design meetings with internal teams, clients and suppliers.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to obtain design inputs and resolve technical issues.
  • Take ownership of assigned work and proactively advance engineering activities and decisions.

Procurement, Manufacturing and Field Support

  • Provide pre-order and post-order engineering support.
  • Prepare and review engineering quotation requests, technical evaluations, estimates and proposals.
  • Review and approve engineering quotation-request packages and purchase requisitions, as required.
  • Resolve technical issues and design deviations arising during procurement, manufacturing, assembly or testing.
  • Support quality surveillance activities and the disposition of non-conformances.
  • Conduct site visits at nuclear generating stations and supplier facilities.
  • Support testing, commissioning and other field activities when required.

Mentorship and Organizational Support

  • Provide technical guidance to drafting personnel.
  • Mentor and oversee junior engineers.
  • Advise project teams on fuel handling and related mechanical-design matters.
  • Support other senior engineers and the Branch Manager with day-to-day engineering activities.
  • Contribute to training, technical problem-solving and long-term knowledge retention within the fuel handling engineering function.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in at least one of the following areas:
    • Machine design
    • Automation
    • Mechanical equipment or tooling design
    • Fluid-power systems
    • Oil-hydraulic control systems
    • Water process-control systems
  • Strong understanding of machine mechanics, mechanics of materials, material selection and machine-component design.
  • Strong understanding of fluid mechanics and process-system control design.
  • Experience designing open- and closed-loop oil-hydraulic circuits.
  • Ability to perform hands-on mechanical design and complex engineering calculations.
  • Ability to lead technical work, own assigned deliverables and move projects forward.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a dynamic, team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines and in high-pressure or emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain productive working relationships with colleagues, clients and project stakeholders.
  • Willingness and ability to travel when required.

Professional Registration

Registration, or eligibility for registration, as a Professional Engineer in Ontario is preferred. Whether Ontario P.Eng. registration is mandatory for this specific requirement is to be confirmed with the client.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Approximately 15–20 years of relevant experience and readiness to operate at a senior specialist or PG5 level.
  • Direct experience with CANDU fuel handling machines or comparable nuclear fuelling equipment.
  • Relevant experience gained with organizations such as BWXT or GE Hitachi.
  • Experience with PWR fuelling machines or closely related nuclear refuelling equipment.
  • Experience designing robotic, automated or remotely operated mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of pressure-boundary engineering, including:
    • Pressure-vessel design and analysis
    • Code classification and code-class boundaries
    • Non-destructive examination
    • Component integrity
    • Design registration
  • Knowledge of the following codes and standards:
    • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Sections II, III, V, VIII and IX
    • CSA N285.0
    • CSA B51
    • ASME Y14.5
  • Knowledge of seismic and environmental qualification methods and processes.
  • CAD experience using Solid Edge or SolidWorks.
  • Strong presentation and public-speaking capabilities.

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between ¤90.00 and ¤120.00
