Senior Computer Systems Engineer

Position Overview

Our client is expanding its Computer Systems Engineering capability to support major CANDU nuclear programs. This position is intended for a senior engineer who can operate independently, provide technical leadership to junior staff, and contribute to the design and modernization of safety-critical computerized control and monitoring systems.

The successful candidate will work in a highly regulated, multidisciplinary nuclear engineering environment, contributing to foundational preliminary design work as Monark progresses toward detailed engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform conceptual and preliminary design of computerized safety, control, and monitoring systems, establishing system requirements, architecture, technologies, and performance/reliability expectations.
  • Evaluate digital I&C products and establish appropriate processes and procedures for software design, development, verification, and validation.
  • Execute software engineering activities including requirements specification, software design descriptions, coding, verification, testing, and technical documentation.
  • Develop software and scripts across applicable programming languages, platforms, and environments, including:
    • IEC 61131-3 languages
    • C / C++
    • Varian / SSCI-890 / PDP11 Assembler
    • Fortran
    • Pascal
    • Visual Studio
    • LabVIEW
    • XML
    • Photon
  • Define requirements and develop test/development tools used in the production and validation of safety-critical software.
  • Prepare and maintain Computer Engineering documentation including software requirements specifications, software design descriptions, software manuals, and supporting technical documents.
  • Develop engineering guides, procedures, and work practices aligned with applicable international standards for nuclear safety software.
  • Apply relevant nuclear/I&C codes and standards to design and engineering activities.
  • Coordinate technical activities with clients, suppliers, vendors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching, and guidance to junior and intermediate engineers.
  • Prepare and deliver effective technical presentations.
  • Independently manage assigned engineering work, including priorities, schedules, budgets, execution, and progress reporting.
  • Support delivery of high-quality engineering outputs within a safety-driven and highly regulated environment.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Honours degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a relevant engineering discipline from a recognized university.
  • Significant experience in computerized controls, I&C, safety systems, or safety-critical software engineering.
  • Nuclear industry experience is mandatory.
  • Targeting approximately 12–15+ years of relevant experience for the seniority required by the team.
  • Demonstrated experience with safety system and/or control system design and testing.
  • Experience applying nuclear/I&C standards, with relevant indicators including:
    • IEC 61508
    • IEC 60880
    • IEC 61226
    • IEC 62138
    • CSA N290.14
    • CSA N290.7
  • Engineering/software development background within environments such as nuclear I&C, industrial controls, manufacturing, robotics, or other relevant computerized control applications.
  • Previous technical leadership, team leadership, coaching, or mentoring experience.
  • Experience within an operating nuclear power station and/or CANDU environment is highly desirable.
  • Experience with nuclear power plant I&C modernization methodologies and processes is an asset.
  • Familiarity with CANDU process, safety, or safety-related I&C system functions, configurations, and equipment is an asset.
  • Familiarity with nuclear/industrial QA programs and applicable CSA, IEEE, and related engineering codes and standards is an asset.
  • Strong technical analysis and engineering problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to develop practical solutions to complex engineering problems.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and customer-facing capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a large multidisciplinary engineering environment.

Professional Registration

P.Eng. in Ontario is highly desirable / preferred based on client discovery. The original job description identifies Ontario P.Eng. registration as a requirement; however, client qualification notes identified it as a nice-to-have. Final requirement status to be confirmed with the client.

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between ¤139,500 and ¤173,700
