Our client is a leading energy utility that generates, purchases, distributes and sells electricity. They are currently looking for a Project Manager – Utility Capital Projects for their Burnaby location, for a 1 year assignment
Overview:
Our client is looking for a Project Manager to work with client’s Project Delivery team, you will be responsible for planning and executing of a portion of client’s multi-billion-dollar portfolio of generation, transmission and substation projects. for the Stations P&C (Protection and Control) and Telecom portfolio delivering projects on scope and on budget.
Role Accountabilities
- Acts as a Project Manager in Project Delivery for multiple projects with low to medium risk/impact/complexity throughout the Province.
- May act as a Program Manager or Project Manager for projects delivered by External Service Providers.
- Accountable for determining how a Project will be delivered. Develops project plans, including scope, budget, schedule and assigns project team responsibilities in order to accomplish project objectives.
- Development of the Project business case to support the Project justification. Gives presentations including Gate Board presentations.
- Project reporting including monthly status reporting, special project reports, completion reports. Accountable for all final Project reports.
- Accountable for the Project Financials; forecasting, monitoring, transactions and closeout.
- Monitors Project progress to ensure the work is carried out in the most cost-effective manner. Evaluates risks, applies innovative solutions and documents lessons learned.
- Manages the full life cycle of the Project (Identification, Definition and Implementation Phases) within agreed upon scope, timeline and budget, using considerable innovation in the planning, analysis and execution of tasks and judgment and resolution of unusual problems.
- Coordinates and leads large multi-disciplinary professional teams and ensures that internal and external resources with appropriate skill sets are provided. Provides advice, leadership, and guidance to project staff, reviews work in progress and assesses completed work for accuracy, required results and quality assurance.
- Develops supply chain strategies and establishes commercial arrangements with consultants and contractors, as required.
- Represents client as the ‘Client’s Representative’ on construction, services and equipment contracts. Participates in contract and claim negotiations with suppliers and contractors, as required.
- Represents client in discussions with Indigenous Groups, customers and other external stakeholders such as regulators and government agencies. Secures licenses and regulatory approvals, as required for the projects under their management.
- Reviews and approves financial commitments and payments to Financial Authorization Approval Policy (FAAP) limits.
- Supports client Project and Program Management (PPM) compliance across the portfolio and ensures the quality of project documentation is aligned with the intent of client’s PPM Practice and reflective of the complexity and risks of the project.
Education and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline such as Engineering, Business, or Environmental Sciences or equivalent preferred. Candidates who have a technical Diploma plus several years of relevant Project Management experience will also be considered.
- PMP certification is required.
- Minimum five(5) years of progressive project management experience in fields of expertise within an electric utility or similar environment.
- Excellent report writing, communication, facilitation, negotiation, presentation and interpersonal skills.
- Intermediate level knowledge in a specific field such as engineering, geoscience, environmental science or business to provide technical coordination and leadership.
- Knowledgeable of project-related standards, policies, practices and processes.
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced dynamic environment, adjusting strategies in response to customer and client requested changes that are often urgent in nature.
- Proven leadership ability in managing, motivating and developing a team.
- Field experience, engaging with plant operations and construction management, is preferred.
- Well developed planning, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
