Role Overview

This position reports to the head of design services and focuses on contributing to the technical execution of projects while coordinating with both internal teams and external partners. The role operates closely with mechanical engineering groups and supports the development of specialized mechanical equipment and systems used in nuclear energy applications. Work may involve early-stage concepts through to detailed development, analysis, documentation, manufacturing support, testing, commissioning, and ongoing operational assistance. Projects can include automated handling equipment, specialized tooling, robotic systems, and related mechanical assemblies used in reactor environments and associated facilities.

Key Duties

  • Assist in creating and refining designs for automated or semi-automated equipment, including components such as piping, machined parts, structural assemblies, and fabricated items using modern 2D and 3D modelling tools.

  • Collaborate with engineers, technologists, and other designers in a technical environment to advance project work.

  • Generate and revise part drawings, assembly drawings, layouts, and material lists.

  • Select appropriate mechanical hardware and components.

  • Apply tolerance practices and consider ease of manufacturing and assembly during design.

  • Provide technical support to teams involved in engineering, purchasing, and production.

  • Contribute to internal and client design discussions, preparing and sharing technical information when needed.

  • Occasionally visit client or project sites within the province.

  • Support project timelines and cost awareness for assigned tasks.

  • Follow established processes, quality expectations, safety requirements, and applicable codes or contractual obligations.

  • Participate in improvements to design processes, tools, and technologies.

  • Assist with proposal activities, including reviewing scope and contributing to estimates when required.

  • Identify potential project issues, analyze solutions, and communicate recommendations.

  • Promote safe work practices across all activities.

  • Short-duration travel may occur for meetings or project coordination.

Required Background

  • Diploma or certification in mechanical engineering technology (or similar) with relevant design experience.

  • Experience using parametric 3D design software, ideally common industry platforms.

  • Understanding of drafting fundamentals, including tolerancing practices.

  • Ability to produce drawings independently using CAD tools.

  • Familiarity with machining methods and practical manufacturing limits.

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated analytical thinking and ability to make decisions independently.

  • High attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Awareness of change management practices in engineering environments.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with limited supervision.

  • Creative, solution-oriented mindset.

Preferred Background

  • Experience developing mechanical systems and assemblies.

  • Professional membership with a relevant technologist or engineering body.

  • Familiarity with file management systems for design documentation.

  • Exposure to formal engineering change processes in regulated industries.

  • Experience in nuclear or similarly regulated sectors.

  • Knowledge of relevant Canadian or international codes and standards related to nuclear or pressure equipment.

  • Understanding of machine design principles and design-for-manufacture approaches.

  • Ability to coordinate with project teams, suppliers, and clients to maintain alignment on scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Comfortable working independently while collaborating with cross-functional teams such as project management, software, and design.
