JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Drafter – Contract Role
Department: Engineering & Design Services
Reports To: Engineering Manager
SUMMARY OF THE ROLE
The Drafter will support engineering and project teams by developing detailed mechanical layout drawings using CAD software. This includes translating engineering notes, sketches, schematics, and vendor specifications into accurate 2D and 3D models, ensuring alignment with project requirements and technical standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Participate in site visits and coordination meetings to support planning activities.

Perform or oversee field measurements and verify project documentation.

Coordinate external CAD resources when required.

Develop precise 2D and 3D drawings using limited input such as technical notes, sketches, or verbal direction.

Extract relevant details from existing drawings, models, or supplied documentation.

Maintain all mechanical layout drawings using appropriate CAD tools and established drafting procedures.

Facilitate clear communication between fabrication teams and mechanical layout specialists to ensure accurate information exchange.

Collaborate with designers, engineers, technicians, and fabrication personnel to build 3D models of prototypes and technical components.

Create drawings for product designs, site layouts, packaging specifications, and other project-related models as needed.

Produce block diagrams and schematic layouts for mechanical, electrical, or electronic systems.

Follow established drafting standards for layer management, annotations, dimensioning, and document formatting.

Review and update CAD files to reflect design modifications or project changes.

Maintain the internal database of CAD drawings and project information.

Support estimating teams when mechanical design input is required.

Identify opportunities for CAD software improvements, upgrades, or additional tools.

QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION

Diploma or degree in a technical discipline or relevant industry experience in fabrication/construction.

Understanding of ASME and CSA standards.

Strong competency in 3D modelling and interpretation of mechanical drawings.

Knowledge of piping systems, pressure vessels, and fabrication workflows.

Experience with 3D scanning or point cloud manipulation is considered an asset.
TECHNICAL & PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

Proficient in CAD software — ideally one or more of: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CADWorx, Inventor, AC Plant 3D, AC MEP, Revit, or related BIM platforms.

Familiarity with fabrication practices, custom steel work, and piping code requirements.

Understanding of welding and finishing techniques related to steel, stainless steel, and aluminum components.

Strong troubleshooting capabilities and technical aptitude.

Able to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams and work independently when required.

Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between CA$40.00 and CA$55.00
