Specialist Mechanical Equipment Engineer

Locations: Mississauga, Pickering or Port Elgin, Ontario
Contract term: 12 months
 

Position Overview

The Specialist Mechanical Equipment Engineer will provide senior mechanical engineering expertise for nuclear power plant systems and major equipment.

The successful candidate will oversee mechanical and piping design packages through the full engineering lifecycle—from conceptual design through Available for Service and project closeout. The engineer will also provide technical leadership to junior personnel, interface directly with clients and ensure designs comply with applicable nuclear codes, standards and regulatory requirements.

This position requires a self-directed engineer who can operate independently in a fast-paced, matrixed project environment while overseeing multidisciplinary engineering deliverables.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Equipment and System Design

  • Prepare and review design-basis documentation for nuclear and conventional power plant systems.
  • Produce and review engineering documents such as:
    • Design specifications
    • Design reports
    • Overpressure-protection reports
    • Equipment and system drawings
    • Bills of materials
    • SCL documentation
    • Code-classification documents
    • Supporting calculations and technical records
  • Provide engineering expertise for mechanical equipment and systems within:
    • Nuclear Island
    • Turbine Island
    • Balance of Plant
    • Auxiliary systems
    • HVAC systems
    • Compressed-air systems
    • Water systems
    • Chillers and associated equipment
  • Support large static, rotating and packaged mechanical equipment, including major machinery and turbine-generator systems.

Design Package Leadership

  • Oversee the preparation of Mechanical and Piping Structures, Systems and Components design packages.
  • Manage design packages through the complete engineering lifecycle:
    • Conceptual design
    • Preliminary and detailed design
    • Procurement and supplier integration
    • Construction and installation support
    • Available for Service
    • Engineering closeout
  • Ensure engineering deliverables comply with applicable codes, standards, client requirements and regulatory obligations.
  • Review designs prepared by junior engineers and provide the required technical direction and verification.
  • Integrate supplier technical specifications and equipment requirements into the broader plant design.

Codes, Standards and Regulatory Support

  • Apply pressure-boundary codes and standards, including:
    • CSA N285.0
    • ASME Section III, Division 1
    • ASME B31.1
  • Support pressure-boundary classification and registration activities.
  • Interface with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and the Technical Standards and Safety Authority when required.
  • Prepare or review regulatory correspondence, TSSA registration packages, reconciliation packages, code classifications and technical memoranda.
  • Ensure applicable nuclear regulatory and pressure-boundary requirements are addressed throughout the design process.

Client and Supplier Interface

  • Interface directly with customer engineering representatives.
  • Serve as a senior technical contact for mechanical equipment and related system matters.
  • Work closely with equipment manufacturers and suppliers to confirm technical requirements, resolve issues and integrate equipment into the plant design.
  • Coordinate across engineering, procurement, projects and supply-chain functions.
  • Communicate technical issues, design status, risks and required decisions to internal and external stakeholders.

Technical Leadership and Mentorship

  • Lead, supervise and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and other project personnel.
  • Train and mentor developing engineering staff.
  • Support Engineering Management by providing timely updates on:
    • Engineering progress
    • Technical performance
    • Resource requirements
    • Staffing needs
    • Project risks and constraints
  • Provide senior technical oversight within a matrix organization containing Engineering Services SMEs and project-assigned engineering teams.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Minimum 15 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience within the nuclear industry.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario and member in good standing.
  • Working knowledge of pressure-boundary codes and standards, including CSA N285.0, ASME Section III Division 1 and ASME B31.1.
  • Experience with power plant mechanical equipment and systems in one or more of the following areas:
    • Nuclear Island
    • Turbine Island
    • Balance of Plant
    • Auxiliary systems
    • HVAC
    • Compressed-air systems
    • Water systems
    • Chillers
  • Experience preparing or overseeing mechanical and piping SSC design packages.
  • Ability to lead engineering work from conceptual design through Available for Service and closeout.
  • Strong understanding of supplier interfaces and the integration of major equipment into plant designs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and client-facing abilities.
  • Results-oriented approach and the ability to perform effectively in a dynamic project-delivery environment.
  • Ability to work independently while leading and supervising junior personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Approximately 20 years of relevant experience and recognized SME-level expertise in static equipment, rotating equipment or major machinery.
  • Direct CANDU nuclear experience.
  • Experience with large turbine-generator systems or comparable major power-generation equipment.
  • Qualified Specialized Professional Engineer under ASME Section III, Division 1, Appendix XXIII, or eligible for certification.
  • Experience interfacing with the CNSC and TSSA.
  • Experience preparing TSSA registration and reconciliation packages, regulatory correspondence, code classifications and technical memoranda.
  • Working knowledge of a major nuclear operator’s Engineering Change Control process.
  • Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 dimensioning and tolerancing requirements.
  • Knowledge of seismic and environmental qualification methods and processes.
  • Strong presentation and public-speaking capabilities.

Successful completion of the required security-clearance process is a condition of employment.

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between ¤90.00 and ¤110.00
