Radiation Physicist Specialist

Location: Ontario – Mississauga, Pickering or Port Elgin
Contract: 12 months
Work Model: Hybrid – 3 days onsite

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Radiation Physicist Specialist to join the Fuel & Physics organization supporting the design of new nuclear facilities as well as the operation, refurbishment, waste-management and decommissioning activities associated with existing CANDU nuclear power plants.

This position requires advanced capability in radiation physics, radiation transport, shielding, dose analysis and computational modelling. The successful candidate will independently lead and review complex technical analyses, develop or adapt computational tools, and provide technical guidance to internal and external stakeholders.

The strongest candidates will bring extensive nuclear radiation-physics experience, strong mathematical modelling capability, familiarity with CANDU reactor systems and advanced experience using radiation transport and inventory codes such as MCNP, SCALE/ORIGEN, ADDAM or comparable tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, plan, execute, document, review and/or verify technical radiation-physics analyses.
  • Perform radiation-transport calculations and modelling.
  • Perform dose calculations and radiation shielding assessments.
  • Develop and/or apply activity-transport and dispersion models.
  • Collate, interpret and summarize results from existing analyses.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports that clearly communicate methodologies, assumptions, results and conclusions.
  • Present technical findings to internal teams, clients and other external stakeholders.
  • Follow applicable procedures, guidelines, quality requirements and standards governing nuclear engineering work.
  • Develop, adapt or modify computer codes to support specific technical applications and solve new engineering/physics problems.
  • Participate in project meetings in-office, virtually or at client sites as required.
  • Maintain and develop technical capability through formal training and on-the-job development.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. in:
    • Physics
    • Engineering Physics
    • Nuclear Engineering
  • Ontario Professional Engineer registration, or actively progressing toward registration.
  • Relevant senior-level experience in areas such as:
    • Neutronics
    • Radiation transport
    • Dose calculations
    • Activity transport
    • Dispersion modelling
  • The formal job description identifies:
    • 15+ years of relevant experience, or
    • Approximately 10 years with an advanced degree.
  • Advanced working knowledge of radiation-physics software, including one or more of:
    • MCNP
    • SCALE/ORIGEN
    • ADDAM
    • Equivalent radiation-transport or inventory-analysis software
  • Strong programming capability, particularly in languages such as:
    • Python
    • MATLAB
    • C++
    • Fortran
    • PERL
  • Familiarity with Linux operating environments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Working knowledge of nuclear engineering work processes and associated technologies.
  • Eligibility to obtain licenses for radiation-physics software controlled under U.S. Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810, including tools such as MCNP and SCALE.
  • Knowledge of codes and standards used in nuclear safety analysis.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian nuclear regulatory framework and applicable nuclear codes and standards.
  • Strong technical writing and analytical communication capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct CANDU reactor experience.
  • Knowledge of CANDU reactor components such as:
    • Calandria tubes
    • Fuel channels
    • Pressure tubes
    • Reactor shielding
  • Experience performing radiation transport and shielding calculations at a nuclear facility.
  • Experience supporting nuclear station operations.
  • Rehabilitation, refurbishment and/or decommissioning experience.
  • Experience with code development, source control and software testing.
  • Experience with advanced reactor-physics modelling or radiation-physics research.
  • Prior work involving radiation inventory calculations using SCALE/ORIGEN.
  • Direct ADDAM experience.
  • Technical publications and/or recognized subject-matter expertise.

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between ¤80.00 and ¤120.00
