Specialist Electrical Engineer – Nuclear

Location: Ontario – Hybrid
Term: 12-Month Contract

Position Overview

We are seeking a senior-level Specialist Electrical Engineer to provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise across electrical systems supporting CANDU nuclear generating stations and associated nuclear projects.

The successful candidate will support the design, modification, assessment, maintenance and life extension of complex electrical systems. This position requires strong hands-on electrical design experience, knowledge of electrical power distribution and safety/standby power systems, and the ability to resolve complex engineering challenges within a highly regulated environment.

The role will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients, suppliers, operations, maintenance, licensing and safety stakeholders while providing technical guidance to junior engineers and designers.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Systems Engineering & Design

  • Provide technical expertise across electrical power distribution, protection and control, standby/emergency power systems and plant electrical equipment.
  • Participate in conceptual, preliminary and detailed engineering for CANDU and other nuclear electrical systems and modifications.
  • Develop and review engineering calculations, system studies, specifications, design documentation and engineering change packages.
  • Perform electrical system assessments including:
    • Load flow
    • Short-circuit analysis
    • Protection coordination
    • Arc-flash hazard analysis
    • Harmonic analysis
    • Surge protection
    • System reliability studies
  • Support medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution design, including Single Line Diagrams, Elementary Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams, Cable Block Diagrams, schedules and electrical load lists.
  • Perform or review transformer sizing, cable sizing and circuit breaker sizing calculations.
  • Support equipment qualification, environmental/seismic assessments, condition monitoring and aging management activities.

Technical Documentation & Procurement

  • Prepare or contribute to engineering drawings, calculations, design/analysis reports, design requirements, design manuals, bills of material, design specifications, technical specifications, component specification sheets and commissioning specifications.
  • Review documentation produced by interfacing engineering disciplines.
  • Prepare technical input for equipment/material requisitions and Engineering Quotation Requests.
  • Support specification and procurement of electrical equipment including transformers, switchgear, MCCs, motors, variable frequency drives, distribution load centres, UPS systems, rectifiers/inverters, diesel generators and electrical/control/instrumentation cables.
  • Prepare scopes of work and provide technical input to bid proposals.

Project & Field Support

  • Support field walkdowns throughout the design lifecycle and prepare associated reports.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, field changes, design revisions, commissioning, AFS and project closeout.
  • Support testing, troubleshooting, commissioning and plant start-up activities.
  • Contribute to engineering risk assessments, failure investigations and corrective action programs.
  • Provide timely engineering resolutions to critical technical issues.
  • Complete assigned engineering scopes within established quality, budget and schedule requirements.

Technical Leadership & Collaboration

  • Coordinate with clients, suppliers, stakeholders and multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Interface with operations, maintenance, licensing and safety organizations to resolve complex engineering issues.
  • Provide technical direction to designers and drafters.
  • Supervise, coordinate and review work performed by junior/assistant engineers and designers.
  • Support mentoring and development of less-experienced engineering professionals.
  • Prepare estimates, monitor schedules and assign work to support project completion dates.
  • Provide technical oversight of vendors and contractors.

Nuclear Quality & Compliance

  • Perform engineering activities in accordance with applicable with our clients procedures and quality assurance programs.
  • Ensure work complies with applicable nuclear codes, standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Support requirements relating to cybersecurity, software qualification and EMI/RFI as applicable to nuclear electrical equipment.
  • Maintain strong nuclear safety, engineering governance and quality standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university, or equivalent recognized by Professional Engineers Ontario.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario.
  • Minimum 15 years of relevant electrical engineering experience, with significant experience supporting nuclear, heavy industrial or large industrial power systems.
  • Demonstrated hands-on electrical design experience rather than primarily project/program management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of medium- and low-voltage power distribution systems.
  • Experience with high-voltage/medium-voltage systems, switchgear and electrical distribution.
  • Experience designing and/or supporting emergency, standby or safety-related electrical power systems.
  • Experience with nuclear safety-related electrical systems and engineering design change/control processes.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial power distribution, power-system analysis and high-reliability electrical design.
  • Knowledge of applicable Canadian electrical codes and standards, including CSA C22.1 – Canadian Electrical Code Part I and the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC).
  • Ability to resolve complex electrical engineering and technical problems.
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong stakeholder management and multidisciplinary collaboration capabilities.

Preferred / Asset Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of CANDU nuclear electrical power systems.
  • Experience supporting CANDU technology, nuclear refurbishment and/or life-extension programs.
  • Direct experience with emergency/standby/safety power supplies within a nuclear generating station.
  • ETAP or comparable electrical power-system modelling/analysis software.
  • Construction and/or commissioning experience involving electrical systems in nuclear or heavy industry.
  • Experience with utility engineering standards and configuration management.
  • Experience with advanced condition monitoring of electrical equipment.
  • Relevant electrical design experience from nuclear, mining, oil & gas, metallurgy or other heavy industrial environments.

Work Environment

The role follows a hybrid model with three days per week in office. Available locations include Mississauga, Port Elgin or Pickering. Equipment will be provided. Short-duration travel to jobsites, client/partner offices or vendor facilities may be required.

The pay range that the employer reasonably expects to pay for this position is between ¤90.00 and ¤110.00
