Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, De-icing Operations Maintenance, this position is responsible for inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs of engines, component parts and attachments to de-icing vehicles, mobile, fixed and towed ground-support equipment, including glycol-recovery vehicles, diesel tractors, compressors, and diesel, gasoline and gas-turbine powered (stand-by) power units.

Key Accountabilities

  • Repair and modify de-icing vehicles equipped with hydraulic telescopic booms, data-transfer systems, vehicle-operations computers, computerized nozzle and glycol mixers, storage tanks, glycol burner units, and associated PLCs.

  • Overhaul components requiring extensive knowledge of computerized fuel-injection systems, perform engine tune-ups, and diagnose problems.

  • Inspect, adjust, repair and/or replace all major and minor vehicle and equipment components, transmissions, air-brake, hydraulic and electrical systems.

  • Resolve problems on vehicles and equipment that have suffered failures of components or entire systems.

  • Disassemble complete units when required and rebuild or integrate new, repaired, or replacement components.

  • Check and repair brakes, brake drums, rotors, linings/disc pads, wheel and master cylinders, power assist and brake lines, wheel bearings and seals, and repack as needed.

  • Inspect and repair steering components, shock absorbers, springs, torsion bars, and visually check alignment.

  • Perform major and minor maintenance and repairs, replacements, and preventive-maintenance inspections on all emergency power units installed at the Central De-icing Facility.

  • Diagnose problems with air-conditioning units and complete repairs, including evacuating and recharging entire systems.

  • Test and calibrate vehicles to ensure exhaust emissions remain within specifications.

  • Perform general servicing, including oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, safety-equipment inspections, tires, batteries, wipers, lights, and glass; clean and degrease vehicles and equipment.


Qualifications

  • High-school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience as a heavy-equipment mechanic with direct experience in vehicular and equipment maintenance across a variety of jobs.

  • Experience working on a wide range of equipment.

  • Valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification as a Truck and Coach Technician (310T).

  • Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a D/A class AVOP permit within 30 days of appointment.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain Transport Canada security clearance.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of vehicle technology associated with the design, inspection, testing and use of de-icing vehicles and equipment.

  • Ability to stay current with Ministry of Transportation regulations and best practices, plus new technology across a diversified fleet of light and heavy, technologically advanced equipment.

  • Proficiency with computer diagnostics and programming tools for troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • Awareness of hazardous-spill response and containment, accurate record-keeping, and occupational health and safety practices.

  • Skill in maintaining tools and equipment.

  • Familiarity with airport layout.

  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
